Chinese authorities are planning to build Lobei Airport in the border city of Haegan to boost trade with Russia. According to the SCMP, the launch of the air harbor is scheduled for 2027, its capacity will be up to 450 thousand passengers and 1,600 tons of cargo per year.
Haegan, located in Heilongjiang Province, used to focus on coal mining, but is now experiencing a recession and is focusing on logistics and tourism. Local authorities believe that the proximity to the Russian border creates conditions for the city to become an important trade and transport hub.
Experts note that the project can contribute to a more active development of cross-border cooperation between China and Russia. In addition to logistics, Hagan is also developing graphite production and domestic tourism to compensate for the loss of industrial income.
